My choice was a
low club, the suit partner was almost sure to have. Why
clubs? Remember the bidding. Partner was a passed hand and
she hadn’t opened a weak two-bid in diamonds, hearts or
spades! Though I wouldn’t bet my life on partner’s suit
being clubs, I was sure willing to bet my matchpoints on
this board that it was.
My thinking was
vindicated. Partner’s whole hand amounted to a club suit and
nothing else:

With the
appearance of two little clubs in the dummy (declarer had Kx),
it was easy for us to set up 5 winners in clubs, and when
the smoke cleared, we defeated 1NT doubled three tricks for
+800.
The moral of
the story:
You
can learn a lot about partner’s hand
by recalling what she
didn’t bid.
